What things have you made?
This term I have created my 3 artefacts, one representing the theme of power, the second spectacle and the third memory. Myself and 3 other guys off the course have also created a TV channel on youtube where another 21 videos for the project I am carrying out with the Coventry Blaze Ice Hockey team are. These other 21 videos include after game highlights, after game interviews with the players and the Head Coach of the Coventry Blaze. I have also been on tour with the Coventry Blaze to Italy where I was part of a team of 3 filming the games of the tournament; we had exclusive access to after game press conferences between the teams who had played and journalists. We were the only camera crew in there, we filmed the player’s pre game and post game, and we filmed the fans that travelled all the way. We are in the process of making a tour DVD of the tournament.
What have I experimented with?
With my artefacts, I have experimented with photography. I am not a photographer, but I enjoyed doing something different, other than moving image. With my memory artefact I went totally different. I wanted to not go for visual effects, I wanted to go for something that was simple but made the audience really think and bring back memories of the dates that appeared in front of them, my influence for this idea was using Collective Memory.
I have done lots of experimental work with the Ice Hockey channel I run along with 3 other guys off the course. We have tried out new ways of filming, new camera positions, new ways of editing. Every game we have created highlights for, you will see development, and us experimenting with new ideas that we have come up with. We have worked along side Sky Sports on many occasions, adapting there approaches to filming the Ice Hockey. These include using extreme close ups, slow motion replays and creating our own graphics for the highlights. We have tried out many different graphics, ranging from ones we have created to the graphics we are currently using, which an external graphic design student produced for us. We have experimented with different editing styles and production techniques to improve productivity and quality. All of this can be seen on my word press.
What has worked? What has pleased me?
I was very happy with how my power artefact came out. I wanted to use something that was accessible to me, but no one else would do. I thought that using the ice hockey would be perfect for this, and it proved to be. I produced an interview after a game with the Coventry Blaze Head Coach, who is also Great Britain’s Head Coach. He was extremely angry after this game, and he came across as a very powerful man. I was extremely happy with this as Paul Smith thought it was from a Sky Sports or the BBC, when in fact I arranged the Interview, filmed it and edited the final artefact. I am very happy with the memory artefact, it may be a bit too simple, but the idea behind it I like a lot, and think it could influence my FMP.
The ice hockey, I am obviously very happy with, as you can see going through my research and development for it, there are many fantastic opportunities it has opened out to me. How many people can say the following has happened to them:
- They have worked a long side Sky Sports filming a professional sports team
- Sky Sports use our footage on Sky Sports Extra and Sky Sports news when they have not filmed the game.
- Have been on tour to Italy all for free with one of the best Ice Hockey Teams in Europe getting exclusive access to conferences and interviews,
- Having the channel and our work being talked about in one of the countries leading ice hockey magazines, called Power Play,
- Being mentioned on Coventry radio stations as the TV crew uncovering a controversial goal being disallowed, when in fact our footage shows it going in, in the final game of a ice hockey tournament, making the Coventry Blaze loose that game and out of the tournament,
- There videos getting around 1500 views a week on there highlights
We have gained so many contacts from doing this, and produced work I am very proud to say I a leading part of.
What has gone wrong? What have I learnt?
With my power artefact it changes screen sizes at the beginning, which was due to a capturing problem I had. Unfortunately the only way to resolve this was by re capturing and editing the whole artefact again, which I did not want to do because it only started to do when it was uploaded onto youtube.
I have learnt so many new skills. I have learnt how to use Premier Pro, how to think up ideas and produce them in a short time scale, work to a theme and most of all I have learnt so many new ways of getting around problem on shoots. For example with the ice hockey, the equipment we get from the loan shop maybe faulty, like tripods that stands don’t lock, so fixing this on the spot took quick thinking and innovative thinking, so we didn’t miss the beginning of the game. Sky was there for a couple of games, taking up all our space. Had to find new space to film. But this is harder than it sounds as space is limited in the Sky Dome. We have uploaded videos that have had wrong dates on and spelling mistakes. So we have learnt to get all 4 of us to check everything before anything gets uploaded of exported. We have learnt that it is worth going through the night till 6am to get the highlights up to get the most hits.
We got a complaint by Sky Sports because we put our highlights up 5 days before they were showing there footage of the game, and they had the licence to that game, we were allowed to show 2 minutes, ours was 4 minutes, so we had to take this down. We have learnt that we have to be very careful with the footage we create and we have to make sure we know what we can and can’t do.
What work has influenced you?
For my power artefact, match of the day has influenced me, when there has been a game that has included many bad referee calls, players playing badly, disallowed goals etc, they all make up for powerful interviews. For my memory artefact, the latest Hovis advert has influenced my work, not for the visuals but the idea that it represents, of collective memory. How we represent certain dates and years with events, how we can shape a whole year by one event. Sky sports was our influence for the Ice Hockey highlights, I love how there graphics come in and how they show multiple camera angles, it makes them look more visually appealing and professional. We do not have the branding that Sky has, so we have to make our own, and so we want to come across as professional. Another influence has been Match of the Day. As this is a show dedicated to showing highlights, it has meant we have learnt a lot from it. How they use graphics, audio, interviews and how they use the commentary. The film Zidane, A 21st Century Portrait has influenced me in new ideas for the Ice Hockey.
What new things am I going to try? What am I going to develop?
We have had so many new ideas for the Ice Hockey idea, which we want to use for our Final Major Project. The following is what ideas we have had to develop the channel further:
- Add commentary to the highlights. This will be done in the post production stages of the highlights, so we have more control over timings, as it can be very hard to edit otherwise.
- Create documentaries on players, like how the film Zidane, A 21st Century Portrait shows him. We want to create a documentary, day in the life of a player, but do it in a different approach. Not just a standard documentary, really get into the mind set of him, following the player during a game, just the player, not following the game. Having different cameras set up to capture his emotions and feelings.
- After game interviews with the players.
- End of season DVD packed with Bonus features that will not be on the channel.
- Italy Tour DVD again packed with footage that is not on the channel.
- Advertise the channel.
- Sponsorship for the channel, get local companies to sponsor the TV channel, get some revenue coming in. We have checked this with the club and they are fine with it.
- Blaze in the community. They do lots of community work, so filming this and make mini documentaries.
- Do a Fan Zone for a game, as a test. We want to see how it will work. Get 2 avid fans of the Blaze, who are good at talking and know there stuff; get them to do the commentary for a game, like how Sky Sports do.
- We want to make an intro to the highlights, no longer than 10-15 seconds, but using a mixture of graphics, moving image and animation.
- A promotional video for the channel, we want to use convergent in relation to creating something that is different, not just sped up ice hockey footage of shots and goals, like the other teams produce. We want something that represents our channel the most, and shows off our skills.
